ARC® Video Subsystem

The ARC Video subsystem family comprise configurable subsystems that offers a highly efficient video encode and video decode solution for low power multimedia applications. ARCŪ Video Subsystem family members include the following: AV 417V, AV 407V, AV406V, AV 404V, and AV 402V. These five new members join the AV 401, which provides highly efficient video decode. Each new family member incorporates must-have video and imaging codecs in a pre-verified, programmable environment. Being fully programmable and configurable, these products enable ARC customers to create differentiated products. The subsystems are targeted towards multi-standard, video enabled-devices such as cell phones, image sensors, portable media players, mobile TV handsets, DVR, etc.

The newest family members set a new standard for high quality video encoding. They employ ARC's new patent-pending technology "Dynamic Adaptive Encoding", which enables encoding of video streams at the lowest power. Dynamic Adaptive Encoding continuously evaluates system resources and adaptively applies different processing resources to achieve the optimum result. For example, Dynamic Adaptive Encoding allows the designer to adjust the encoding process in a phone with a fully charged battery versus one running close to empty. The products are capable of encoding and decoding up to Standard Definition resolution video using advanced video coding standards such as H.264. The new family members are built on ARC's VRaptor architecture.

Configurable
By leveraging ARC's patented technology, customers can easily configure the ARC Video Subsystems to match stringent system requirements. The Subsystem's area, power consumption and performance can be tuned to create a highly efficient solution.

Programmable
Customers can program the ARC Video Subsystems to include additional codecs or algorithms. This extends the market life of the Video Subsystems and reduces the need for product respin.

Multi-Standard
Supported video encoders include H.264 BP, MPEG-4 SP/ASP, H.263 profile 0, and JPEG. Up to full D1 resolution for all encoders. Supported video decoders include H.264 BP, VC-1 SP, H.263, MPEG-4 SP, MPEG-4 ASP, MPEG-2 MP, MJPEG, JPEG, MJPEG, TIFF, GIF, and PNG Up to full D1 resolution for all decoders.

Development System
The ARC Video Subsystems can be evaluated using the ARCangel 4 (AA4) demonstrator, which is also available for use as a highly integrated development platform. The AA4 incorporates an FPGA-based ARC Video Subsystems running the open-source Linux operating system and MPlayer media player. The AA4 supports all the standard codecs supported by the ARC Video Subsystems.
